Chapter Twenty

Bailey gasped.

Instead of backing down, Evie leaned closer and narrowed her eyes. The girl had grown up with five brothers. And she’d never let one of them push her around. “Are you threatening me?”

“I’m gonna need you to take a step back, Gordon,” the sheriff’s deep voice said from behind the hot tub. “And I think we all need to calm down.”

Bailey floundered in the hot tub, splashing water on Sawyer’s cowboy boots as he leaned down to grab her arm and pull her to her feet. “You all right, darlin’?”

“I am now.” How did he always seem to show up when she needed him? Or when she and Evie had gotten themselves into another embarrassing scrape?

“You okay, Evie?” Sawyer asked as he held Bailey’s arm so she could finally climb over the side of the tub.

“I will be,” Evie told him, her eyes still flashing with anger. “When we get away from this jerk.”

“You’re the jerk,” Gordy spat back.

Evie whipped her head toward Sawyer. “You heard him threaten me, right? He said he was going to come down and try to destroy my business.”

Gordy shook his head at Sawyer and gave Evie a look like she was overacting. “That’s not what I said.”

“That’s exactly what you said.”

Water was dripping from Bailey’s clothes and hair, and she wrapped her arms around her stomach to stop herself from shivering. “I h-h-heard you,” she said, her teeth chattering as she spoke.

Evie planted her hands on her hips, impervious to the fact that she was soaking wet, and glared at Gordy. She was shaking too, but it seemed more from anger than from the cool evening air against her wet clothes.

Gordy made a scoffing sound as he turned toward Sawyer, as if they were just a couple of good ol’ boys. “Women—am I right? Always overreacting.”

Sawyer grabbed a couple of rolled-up towels that were being used as part of the display next to an eight-person hot tub, and tossed one to Evie before wrapping the other around Bailey’s shoulders. “Let’s get you two out of here and find you some dry clothes.” He pointed a finger at Gordy, the soothing tone he had used with the women now replaced with a hardened edge. “You go on home too. I’ll stop by in a bit. And you and I are gonna have ourselves a little chat about what went on here.”

“But—” Gordy started to say, but the sheriff cut his next words off with one steely glare. “Yeah, fine. Sure, Sheriff. That sounds good. I’ll rustle us up a couple of beers, and we can hash out this little misunderstanding.”

A small crowd of people had gathered around the hot tub display, drawn in by the shouting and the appearance of the sheriff.

“Nothin’ to see here, folks,” Sawyer told them. “Everything’s under control.” He still had his arm around Bailey as they squished their way back up Vendor Row. Marigold and Aster came hurrying toward them, each holding a blanket. They were dressed in matching black tights and black and yellow striped leotards.
